file error on restart
Dear all, sirs and madams,
I am running version 6.0.0.941 and when I reboot my computer I get a file error message and my locations are garbled. When I start and stop the program. withOUT rebooting, everything is fine. Is there a workaround? As ever Bob |

file error on restart
My laptop was just refreshed this week at work. New image is XP Pro, previous was Windows 2000 Pro. I have seen the same behavior and was quite frustrated to have gone through configuring over and over, just to lose most of my clocks again.
It may be too soon to tell, but I think I have just the fix. Find worldtime.exe (default location is C:Program FilesPawPrint.netWorldTime). Highlight it and right-click. Select Properties. Click the Compatibility tab. Under "Compatibility mode", check the box and select "Windows 2000" from the drop-down list. Click Apply, then OK. I didnīt like the effect of selecting "None" for Constrain Window, so I had to find another work-around. So far, this appears to be doing the trick and I have Constrain Window set to "Auto". Hope you all find this helpful. Update: Oh well, I should have known surviving one reboot wasnīt enough. The program failed again, although I only lost one clock this time... Iīll keep trying. Update 2: I added back the clock and unchecked everything in the settings related to synchronization. This has survived several reboots now. Skipping synchronization on startup is no big deal for me -- it never worked with our firewalls anyway. |

I found a solution thatīs working for my laptop but not for my PC: in General Preferences, Constrain Window, choose None. If you find out something different, please post it so I can try that too.
Thanks, Steff --

Same problem here unfortunately. It is a major setback for such a wonderful and useful program. At the restarting of the World Time you donīt know what to expect. Some of the locations (not all of them) are gone and have to be manually keyed in. Next time it is repeated and again some of the locations are missing. It makes the program unusable.
Any solution please? |

Sorry to be slow getting back to you.
I checked my write permissions and they are fine. I can in fact write to all these files. The error depends on whether you have the box "Load locations on startup" checked or not. The error also depends on the setting of Constrain Window. The program works on my systems (I am using 3) if Constrain Window is set to NONE and "Load Locations at Startup" is NOT checked. Otherwise the program fails badly and will even hang the whole system on occasion. |

I do not have this problem and I am sure there are many others who do not.
One possible cause would be if you do not have write permissions on the directories where WT is storing its data. If, for example it is intalled on a network rather than on your C: drive. In such circs WT may be writing its files to a different directory from the one it loads them from. My WT is installed in "C:\Program Files\PawPrint.net\WorldTime" and has a number of diretories under this. If yours is in a different location this might cause problems. Let us know if this helps or not. --

I would like to echo Bobīs plea. As a person who is in constant contact with people accross Asia, Milwaukee & Helsinki, I rely on WT more than I care to mention. However, after recently reloading onto a new laptop, I am getting very frustrated in having to reload all the clocks each time I startt the PC.
Previously running Windows 2000, and now on XP, is this where the problem lies?? Any help before I go totally bald is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Phil |
